Anemia Deficiency disease caused by lack of iron. Causes tiredness and shortness of breath.
Rickets Deficiency disease caused by lack of calcium. It causes weak and poorly shaped bones.
Drug Substance that affects the way your body works.
Medicine A drug that helps the body to ease the symptoms of a disease or cure the disease.
Side-effect Harmful or unpleasant effects caused by a drug.
Addictive If something makes you feel that you need to have more of the substance this is said to be addictive.
Recreational Drug Any drug used for its mind-altering effect rather than as a medicine.
Caffeine A stimulant that increase the speed at which nerves carry impulses. Found in coffee, tea and cola drinks.
Cannabis A drug that can cause memory loss.
Ecstasy A stimulant that can cause depression, mental illness and even death.
Cocaine Very powerful and harmful stimulant that causes blocked arteries and mental problems.
Herion A very dangerous depressant drug. Cause vomiting and serve headaches.
Skeleton All the bones in the body of a vertebrae.
Skull Collection of bones that protect your brain.
Vertebra Your 'backbone' is made of many bone called vertebrae.
Backbone The series of small bones that provide the main support for the bodies of humans and other vertebrates.
Biceps Muscle at the front of the upper arm that can contract and move the lower arm upwards.
Joints Part of the body where bones are moved by muscles.
Contract When a muscle becomes fatter and shorter.
Relax When a muscle stops contracting and becomes thinner and longer, it relaxes.
Antagonistic Pairs Two muscles that work a joint by pulling in opposite directions, e.g. biceps and triceps.
Triceps Muscle at the back of the upper arm that can contract and move the lower arm downwards.
Strength How strong your body is.
Stamina How long your body can exercise for.
Speed How fast something is moving. Often measured in meters per second (m/s), miles per hour (mph) or kilometres per hour (km/h).
Organ Systems Collection of organs working together to do an important job.
Circulatory Organ system containing the heart and blood vessels
Digestive System The group of organs that carries out digestion.
Respiratory System Made up of the trachea, bronchi and lungs. Gets oxygen into the blood and takes carbon dioxide out of the body.
Aerobic Respiration Process that uses up oxygen to release energy from food. Carbon dioxide is produced as a waste gas.
Social Behaviour How an animal communicates with or reacts other animals of the same species.
Stroke When the nerve tissue in the brain starts to die because too little blood is getting to it.
Heart Attack When the heart muscles start to die because too little blood is getting to them.
Fitness If you are able to do all the things that your lifestyle needs you to do, you are fit.
Balanced Diet Eating a variety of foods to provide all the things the body needs.
Anorexia Disease in which someone else too little and becomes dangerously thin.
Deficiency Disease A disease caused by a lack of a mineral or vitamin.
Nutrient A part of your food that is used as a raw material (fat, carbohydrate, protein, vitamins, minerals).
Kwashiorkor Deficiency disease caused by lack of protein.
Scurvy Deficiency disease caused by lack of Vitamin C. The gums bleed and cuts take a long time to heal.
Heartbeats Rate The number of times the heart beats in one minute.
Ciliated Epithelial Cells Cells in the tubes leading to the lungs that have microscopic hairs, cilia, growing from them.
Gas Exchange Process where oxygen diffuses into the blood and carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood. It happens in the alveoli in the lungs.
Diaphragm Sheet of muscle underneath the lungs. It helps to work the lungs during breathing.
Breathing Moving muscles to make air flow into and out of the lungs.
Ventilation The movement of air into and out of the lungs.
Nicotine Poisons, addictive drug found in cigarettes.
Premature A baby that is born too early and small is said to be premature.
Tar A poisonous, black, sticky substance found in cigarette smoke.
Lung Cancer A disease when cells in the lungs start to divide and grow uncontrollably.
S-factors Four factors that describe how fit you are: Suppleness, Strength, Stamina and Speed
Suppleness How easily your body can bend and twist.
