Question | Answer |
What is convection? | Convection only happens in LIQUIDS and GASSES. Convection happens when particles move from hotter to colder regions and carry the heat with them. |
Why can't convection happen happen in solids? | Convection can't happen in solids because the particles can't move, only vibrate. |
What happens when a liquid or gas is heated up? | When a liquid or gas is heated up, the particles move faster and becomes less dense. |
What is conduction? | Conduction only happens in SOLIDS. It is the process where vibrating particles pass on kinetic energy to neighbouring particles (this causes the rise in temperature). |
Why are metals good conductors? | Metals are good conductors as some of their electrons are free to move. Heat will make the electrons move faster and collide more frequently. |
What is radiation? | Heat is radiated as infrared radiation and can only occur in transparent objects like air and water. All objects emit and absorb radiation constantly. |
What are the best absorbers and emitters? | Dark colours |
What are the worst absorbers and emitters? | Smooth, shiny and light colours (because they reflect) |
