Question Answer
What are the laws of thermodynamics? The laws that describe the way in which energy moves
What does thermos and dynamic refer to? Thermo: heat Dynamics: movement
What are the 3 laws of thermodynamics? 1. Energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it can only change form. 2. Heat can flow from a high temperature region to a low temperature region but not the other way round. 3. As temperature moves towards absolute zero, particle movement approaches a minimum.
What is absolute zero and what happens to particle movement at this temperature? It is the lowest possible temperature as at this temperature particle movement completely dies out.
Explain how energy changes form in a car using a flowchart Chemical potential energy ---> Kinetic energy----> Heat energy
How does energy change form in photosynthesis? Solar energy---> Chemical potential energy ----> Heat energy
Show a diagram which shows how a fridge removes heat from inside to the outside
How do materials go from gases to liquids? Energy is removed from the gas; thus, the particle movement in gas cools down and start attaching themselves together making them liquid..
What happens when a solid is cooled even further? The particle movement gets slower and slower.
Why can we not reach absolute zero? Because it would then break the second law of thermodynamics and is the third law of thermodynamic.
Can energy transformation be 100% percent efficient? Yes and no (to get 100% efficiency, the transfer needs to occur at absolute zero, which is impossible to reach)
Why is energy transformation not 100% efficient? This is because heat energy is always produced during an energy transfer
What gets produced when fuel is burned? Heat energy is produced
How efficient is a normal car and where does the rest of the energy go? Approx. 20% ( The rest usually goes in either heat energy and sound energy)
Why is energy efficiency important? Energy efficiency means using less energy to accomplish the same task.
What is lost at every energy transformation? Energy is lost due to heat energy being produced (most of the time).
What happens to materials when they go from a very high temperature to very low temperatures? Energy is lost?
