Question | Answer |
What date was the Remilitarisation of the Rhineland? | 7th March 1936 |
What happened? | 30,000 troops marched into the Rhineland which had been demilitarised by the Treaty of Versailles. They had been given orders to retreat if faced with French opposition. The German troops were welcomed by the public (mainly Nazi's). |
What was the League's response? | They condemned the actions but did nothing. They were occupied with the events in Abyssinia. Many British argued they were only going into their "own backyard". No-one wanted to provoke a war. |
Significance of the Remilitarisation of the Rhineland? | He sent troops in against the advice of his generals and got away with it. This gave Hitler a lot of confidence and self-belief in his ability to right the wrongs of the Treaty of Versailles. France began to increase spending on it's defensive "maginot line" on the border. |
