Domain The name given to the addresses of computers on a network or the internet. All the addresses are numbers so they are given names which are easier to use
Email An electronic message; it consists of a ‘header’ containing the addresses of the sender & recipient and the ‘content’ which is the actual message
Email client Software application used for sending, receiving & storing emails
Email inbox A folder on a computer used to store incoming messages
Email outbox A folder on a computer used to store outgoing messages
Email server A computer connected to the internet that sends/receives and stores emails
Email address The username of the person followed by the domain that provides the email service
GPS Global Positioning Systems – use satellites to allow GPS devices (e.g. a satnav) to work out where they are
Home page The first page that opens on a user’s computer when a browser starts up – it can be set by the user. A website homepage is the first page to open on a particular website
HTML (hypertext markup language) Instructions to tell a web browser how to display a page
Hyperlink A piece of code that directs a user to another page on a website; the code is usually hidden from the user and the hyperlink appears as a word or sentence
IM Real-time text-based messages sent between people
ISP Internet Service Provider – the company that connects a user to the internet and may also provide their email account
Microprocessor An integrated circuit that carries all the functions of a CPU (central processing unit)
Navigational aid Menus, buttons & links to enable a user to navigate to other pages or places on a page
Online a peripheral connected & ready for use; a computer/user connected to the internet/a network
Posting A contribution to a conversation on a website
Protocol A set of rules that needs to be followed for communication between devices to take place
RFID Radio Frequency Identification (used to tag goods & pets)
Search engine Used to search for information on the www & shows users the results of the search so they can navigate to them
URL Uniform Resource Locator – the route to a file on a server
Video conferencing Uses video cameras, microphones, speakers & monitors to hold meetings/business conversations over the internet
Web browser Software application that allows users to view text, images & other features on web pages and allows navigation between websites
Web page Document, usually written in html, which contains instructions to tell the browser how to display the page
Web server A computer that holds web pages & allows access to them by others over the internet or a network
Website A collection of pages about related topics & accessed from the same servers
World Wide Web Pages of information stored on servers & accessed via the internet
