Question Answer
What do plants need to survive? Plants need minerals, water, light, and space to grow to survive.
How does changing surface area help the plant? The SA:V ratio is extremely important. The bigger the surface area, the more water lost by transpiration.
How could a: a) small, curled b) big surface area of a leaf be an advantage to the plant? a) small - less water lost by transpiration traps a layer of moist air to reduce water lost by evaporation b) large leaves collect the dew that forms in the cold evening.
what are some adaptations in desert plants? → small fleshy leaves with a thick cuticle to keep water loss down → small surface area to minimise water loss by transpiration → stems instead of leaves; fewer stomata
Describe the adaptations of cacti. → The Sharp Spines. These sharp spines not only reduce the amount of water lost due to the plant not having any leaves; it also warns predators not to eat them. The fat, green body is a stem, full of water storing tissue which can take up to 1 TONNE of water/day.
Define transpiration. Transpiration: The process of water vapour being lost through stomata by diffusion.
define stomata. Tiny openings where gas exchange takes place for photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis and respiration take place very _ _ _ _ _ _ _ in _ _ _ or dry conditions. As a result, plants lost water very _ _ _ _ _ _ _, too. !) quickly, 2) hot 3) quickly
