6.1 The Subjunctive
How can it be used?
used to express an attitude, opinion, person will, or to imply hypothesis or doubt.
Formation
take the ils/elles stem of the present indicative, and add the subjunctive endings.
use this same pattern in order to form the subjunctive of verbs with spelling or stem changes.
for nous and vous, use the imparfait forms.
some verbs are unpredictably irregular in the present subjunctive.
aller; aille, ailles, aille, allions, alliez, aillent.
avoir; aie, aies, ait, ayons, yez, aient.
etre; sois, sois, soit, soyons, soyez, soient.
faire; fasse, fasses, fasse, fassions, fassiez, fassent.
pouvoir; puisse, puisses, puisse, puissons, puissez, puissent.
savoir; sache, saches, sache, sachions, sachiez, sachent.
vouloir; veuille, veuilles, veuille, voulions, vouliez, veuillent.
How can I tell when it's used?
sentences calling for the subjunctive fit the pattern:
{main clause} + que + {subordinate clause}
the subjunctive is used after many impersonal expressions that state an opinion.
ce n'est pas la peine que
il est bon que
il est dommage que
il est essential que
il est etonnant que
il est important que
il est indespensible que
il est necessaire que
il est possible que
il est surprenant que
il faut que
il vaut mieux que
Which verbs have irregular present subjunctive forms?
valoir (to be worth it) - qu'il vaille
falloir (to be necessary) - qu'il faille
pleuvoir (to rain) - qu'il pleuve
when the main clause of a sentence expresses WILL or EMOTION, use the subjunctive in the subordinate clause.
demander que
desirer que
exiger que
preferer que
suggerer que
regretter que
etre ravi(e) que
proposer que
recommander que
souhaiter que
The verb DEMANDER is often used with an indirect object + de + {infinitive},
vouloir que
aimer que
avoir peur que
etre content(e) que
etre etonne(e) que
etre fache (e) que
ALTHOUGH the verb esperer expresses emotion, it does not trigger the subjunctive.
