Richard Dyer's Star Theory
  1. Ideology and Culture
    1. Stars promote a certain ideology by representing cultural attitudes and values. Their fans will follow their trends, beliefs and opinions by looking up to them and copying them. This is easily done through social media
      1. We plan to use social media to share AJ's beliefs and values so that they are shared directly with his fans. For example his Twitter account is following Young Minds - a mental health charity for children and young people. This is an increasing, current problem in today's society and AJ is showing his support for the issue.
    2. Stars as Constructions
      1. This suggests that Artists are constructed by record labels, management and publicists for marketing and branding to create a brand image that will attract attention and fans
        1. We wanted AJ to be as authentic as possible as we didn't want him to be branded as a 'fake person'. Even though he is a geniune artist and musician, the record label and publicist will emphasise this when it comes to marketing in order to make him more appealing to audiences
      2. Industry and Audience
        1. Record labels realise that Stars are a way for audiences to spend money. They are aware of the need for variation in the industry and so try and find USP for artists to help them stand out and still appeal to audiences. It is also important that they continuously provide something current and new to interest younger fans
          1. By knowing the audience we can see if there are any gaps in the market and cater to the needs of the audience by giving them something they aren't getting from existing artists in the genre. For example AJ is a goofy, awkard R&B artist which helps him stand out from the slick, smooth male artists in the genre like Jason Derulo. In addition to this, there is a gap in the market for R&B artists as the charts are dominated by Pop and Hip Hop songs
        2. Character and Personality
          1. A Star's personality is established through their music and performance and so it is important that they give a clear indication of who they are through their albums.
            1. We used AJ's social media to show his goofy and fun side and we used the album/music video to show his emotional and serious side. On the inside of the album cover is the collection of words used to show audience what the album means to AJ, giving the audience insight into his thoughts. Music can play a big part in fans lives and so we wanted AJ to be inspirational and for his songs/videos/albums to have meaning behind them
