Resource summary
Post-Modernism
Key Ideas:
Don't generalize families as see them as having different structures
Recognize increased society tolerance to intimate relationships and domestic agreements
Believe nuclear family is fragmented/ AGAINST functionalism
Key theorists:
Stacey- diversity will never be dominate in western culture
Haravan (1978)- life course analysis states sociologists should be concerned with individual family members
And choices made within these family arrangements e.g being a sole earner
Focuses on flexibility+ variation
Criticisms:
Giddens- increased choice can be constraining + liberating
And pure relationships (to meet others needs) is unstable
Fletcher (functionalist)- agrees with above + that people now expect to much
Advantages:
Recognizes cultural + social change
Understands that every family is different
looks INSIDE the family
Disadvantages:
Possibly exaggerates changes in society
Already a well-known idea (unoriginal)
Only looks at positives (bias)
