  1. 1837-1846
    1. The U.S sent in a form called of "Gun Boat Diplomacy". On 8 july 1853 Commodore Perry arrived for commercial agreements.
      1. U.S Promised to return
        1. In March 1854 Tokugawa Shogunate agreed to Treaty of Kanagawa which opened up two ports to U.S trade. Then the U.S got the position most favoured of all the Nations.
          1. In 1858 Japan's government decided to sign the "Treaty of Amity" and commerce with the U.S but the imperial court opposed.
            1. The imperial Court was dominated y nationalist who wanted continuing seclusion
              1. Japan was pressured to sign similar treaties with other Nations (Western Nations)
