Resource summary
Sustainable Future
Energy usage and wastage
Lots of appliances and lights waste energy when left on
Lots of energy is generated by non-sustainable methods like fossil fuels
Problems with plastic
Many single-use plastic items like water bottles are thrown away creating a lot of waste
Non-recyclable plastics can create lots of waste
Not sustainable as created from crude oil - a finite resource
Physical waste
Bad for environment
Builds up in landfill sites
Old electrical appliances dumped
Paper wastage/ people not recycling it
Shred and recycle printer
Air pollution created from emissions
Can impact people's health significantly
Food transportation creates a lot of pollution, especially if it is flown to factories
Vehicles used for travel can release a lot of emissions
Electric cars could use energy from a non-renewable source so they may not be a perfect solution
Can increase the rate of climate change which is bad for the environment
Deforestation
Results in habitat loss and can cause species to go extinct
Could be caused by unsustainable logging
Reduces trees and increases the rate of climate change
Agriculture and food production
Land deforested to make space for crop fields
Current farming methods may not be sustainable enough to feed future populations with crops dying from climate change
GM crops could be a solution
Food production requires a lot of energy and could waste a lot of water which may not be sustainable
Meat production is not sustainable
Animals release methane, a greenhouse gas - contributes to climate change
Animals require a lot of crops to rear them which could go to people instead FACT
Food wastage
Lots of food is thrown away by households
Many people around the world still don't have enough food and are malnourished
Rotting food creates methane - a greenhouse gas
Could collect the methane gas and use it as a biofuel
Inequalities in the world
Gender inequality
Wealth inequalities
Racial inequalities
Poverty (and associated issues)
Homelessness/bad living conditions
Education should be available for all
Identity verification is a problem as 1.1 billion people don't have a way to prove their identity (Arm Holdings, 2018)
Could mean lack of medical records
Could have issues getting finances
Water problems
Around the world there is water scarcity and drought
Water wastage in the house
Cleaning/washing
Through taps (output of 8 litres a minute)
Baths/showers can take a lot of water
Special shower head
Water is a basic necessity and everyone should have access to clean water
Portable water filter
Lots of water and energy could be wasted in purifying and treating water
3 litres wasted for every litre produced (RO filter)
Sources of water e.g. aquifers and resevoirs could be running out
