Kyoto Protocol
The Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 marked the first real international attempt to cooperate to reduce carbon emissions
The aim of the earth summit was to halt the destruction of irreplaceable natural resources
Bigger, richer, more developed countries agreed there would be no raise in carbon emissions
They can afford to purchace and put money into very expensive machenery such as wind turbines
Most of the most developed countries also have very high carbon emissions to to advance, ments in technology
It was established in 1997
The Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on climate change was held in Kyoto, Japan
Hence the name Kyoto Protocol
Each individual country has its own target
This is due to the fact that different countries are more developed than others
Some countries can afford to buy wind turbine etc. which can be very expensive to set up
The treaty became legally binding in the year 2005
This was encouraging sign that we were beginning to take our roles seriously when helping protect the earth
Over 100 developing countries have been exempted from the treaty
Such as India and China
Because of the exemptions of India and China, countries such as the USA and Australia originally opted out
The Agreement included a promise to reduce green house gasses to 5% below 1990 levels between 2008 and 2012
If counties failed to reach their designated targets they would be fined and the money would be put towards better purposes
The protocol has had successes and failures - The UK has cut down over their target carbon footprint
192 countries have joined the protocol
We want to have comfortable lives now and reduce climate change and global warming
We also want to create a sustainable future ensuring that future generations live comfortable with renewable sources of energy
