main ideas
your ear is made up of 3 sections
the outer ear
it's also called the
pinna.
it's the part of
the ear that you
can see.
the pinna is shaped so it
can collect sound waves
it sends these sound waves
through a narrow (estrecho)
tube called the ear canal.
after the sound waves pass
through the ear canal, they reach
the eardrum.
the eardrum is the last
part of the outer ear.
when the eardrum vibrates it
passes the sound waves onto
the middle ear.
the middle ear
the middle ear is a small air filled
space behind the eardrum
it contains the ossicles, which
is made up of 3 tiny bones.
when the eardrum is vibrated by
sound, it moves these 3 tiny bones.
the 1st one is the hammer and it's
attached to the ear drum. when it shakes it
passes the vibration through the next one
that is called the anvil.
the anvil, in turn, passes the vibration onto
the stirrup, the smallest bone in the body.
the inner ear
the cochlea is the final destination of the sound
waves and it's located into the inner ear.
the cochlea is a small snail-shaped tube
containing thousands of tiny hairs immersed in
fluid.
when the ossicles pass the vibrations onto the
cochlea it makes waves in the fluid, wich
moves the tiny hairs.
the movement of the waves
creates a signal which is
transmitted to your brain.
your brain interpretes
this signals as a sound.
