Resource summary
Atomic Radius
Atomic Size: defined by how closely an atom lies to a neighboring atom
Metals- atomic radius is half the distance between adjacent nuclei in a crystal of the element
Nonmetals- typically form compounds; atomic radius is half the distance between nuclei of two identical atoms that are bonded together
Ionic Radius
Atoms gain or lose electrons to form ions
Electrons gain a negative charge, so a loss or gain results in a net charge
Ions have either postive or negative energy
Cations: when atoms lose electron they form positive ions and become smaller
Anions: when atoms gain electrons they form negative ions and become larger
