    1. they route data packets along network cabiling
      1. if this didn't happen then the data would have to go down every internet network to ensure it gets to the right destination
        1. the destination of the packet is on the header of it, and is essentially the post code of the destination
          1. the address allows the packet to use the most efficient route
            1. if you have broadband at home then you use a modem/router
              1. the modem recieves the broadband signal from your ISP via the telephone network
                1. the router part then sends the packets of information to the correct machine in your house
