  1. What is Word Stress?
    1. Relative emphasis that may be given to certain syllables in a word, or to certain words in a phrase or sentence.
      1. We say one syllable very loudly (big, strong, important) and all the other syllables very quietly.
      2. Word Stress Rules
        1. One word has only one stress
          1. We can only stress vowels, not consonants.
            1. Stress on first syllable
              1. Most 2-syllable nouns
                1. Most 2-syllable adjectives
                2. Stress on last syllable
                  1. Most 2-syllable verbs
                3. Stress on penultimate syllable
                  1. Words ending in -ic
                    1. Words ending in -sion and -tion
                    2. Stress on ante-penultimate syllable
                      1. Words ending in -cy, -ty, -phy and -gy
                        1. Words ending in -al
                        2. Compound words
                          1. compound nouns, the stress is on the first part.
                            1. compound adjectives, the stress is on the second part.
