Medical applications of physics
  1. X-rays
    1. Electromagnetic waves
      1. All waves in the electromagnetic spectrum are transverse waves which can travel through a vacuum
        1. Shorter wavelengths travel the most energy
          1. Gamma rays, x-rays and some ultra-violet rays have enough energy to remove electrons from atoms or molecules and form ions
            1. This is called ionisation
              1. ionising radiation can:
                1. Harm the body
                  1. Kill cells
                    1. Damage a cells DNA
                      1. Cause a mutation leading to cancer
              2. X-ray images
                1. Photographic film exposed to x-rays will turn black
                  1. X-rays are transmitted through some materials that are opaque to visible light such as healthy human tissue
                    1. Other materials, such as metal and bone, absorb x-rays, and some materials partially absorb them
                    2. CT Scans
                      1. Computerised tomography is used to build up a three-dimensional image of the inside of an object
                        1. To make one, X-ray images are taken from a number of different positions and angles
                          1. All the results are processed in a computer to build a three-dimensional X-ray image
                            1. It can then be processed in a number of ways, depending on the nature of the investigation carried out
