Incompetent Cervix

A medical condition in which a pregnant woman's cervix begins to dilate and efface before her pregnancy has reached term.
Causes
1. History of Conization
2. Uterine abnormalities
3. Exposed to Diethylstilbestrol (DES)
4. Previous D&C
5. Repeated mechanical dilatation
Sign and Symptoms
1. Cervical dilation without uterine contractions
2. Heavy feeling in the pelvic or rectal areas
3. Bleeding/Spotting
4. Increased discharges
Treatment
1. Cerlage
  1. Type of stiches
    1. McDonald
    2. Abdominal & Hefner
    3. Hefner
    4. Lash
    5. Shirodkar
Complications
1. Miscarriage
2. Preterm birth
3. PROM
Complications
1. PROM
2. Chorioamnionitis
3. Hemorrhage
4. Uterine and Bladder injury
5. Excessive scar tissue
6. Preterm labor
7. Fetal death
Management
1. Bedrest
2. Abstaining from sexual intercourse
