RAM
What is stored in RAM?
Data in current use
Operating System
Used in computer systems as the main memory.
Volatile Memory
Lost when power is lost.
Used to do immediate tasks.
Quick read/write times
More RAM - More programs open at the same time
Virtual memory
When all RAM has been used up, it moves data that has not been accessed recently (Left open in the background for some time) to the hard drive
Hard drive has slower read/write times but extends RAM capacity
Cache memory
Very frequently used data, quicker read/write times than RAM
ROM
Contains prerecorded data. Can only be read, not altered.
Non-volatile Memory
Not lost when power is lost.
Stores essential programs (Like ones that allow computer to start up)
Sometimes used in calculators
Flash memory
Non-volatile Memory
