Core Science C1 Chemistry
  1. Fundamental Ideas
    1. An element is a substance consisting of atoms which all have the same number of protons - i.e. the same atomic number.
      1. The sub-atomic structure of a carbon atom
        1. A table to show relative charges
          1. A chemical bond is a mutual attraction between two atoms resulting from a redistribution of their outer electrons.
            1. An element is an atom or molecule made of a single type of atom. A compound is a molecule made of two or more different elements.
              1. Atoms
                1. The overall charge of an atom is 0
                  1. The number of protons in the nucleus is equal to the number of electrons
                    1. All atoms of an element have the same number of protons.
                      1. Atoms of different elements have different numbers of protons
                        1. Atoms are arranged in the modern periodic table in order of their atomic number (proton number)
                        2. Chemical bonding involves either transferring or sharing electrons in the highest occupied energy levels of atoms.
                          1. Elements in group 1 of the periodic table all have similar chemical properties. They all react with non-metal elements to form ionic compounds in which the metal has a single negative charge.
                            1. Elements in group 7 of the periodic table, the halogens have similar chemical properties. They react with alkali metals to form ionic compounds in which the halide ions hhave a single negative charge.
