Module B4: The Processes of Life
Cell Structure and Function
Plant Cells and animal cells
Similarities
Nucleus; contains DNA (instructions for making proteins)
Cytoplasm; gel-like substance where proteins (e.g. enzymes) are made
Anaerobic respiration happens here
Cell membrane: holds cell together, controls what goes in and out, gases and water pass through freely, barrier to other chemicals
Mitochondria: where the enzymes needed for aerobic respiration are, where reactions take place.
Differences
Plant cells have a cell wall, supports the cell, strengthens it.
Plant cells have a vacuole in the centre, weak solution of sugar and salts
Plant cells, have chloroplasts, where photosynthesis takes place, contain chlorophylland enzymes for photosynthesis
Yeast are single celled microorganisms
used to make bread and wine
they have: cytoplasm, a cell membrane, a nucleus, mitochondria and a cell wall.
Bacteria have simple cell structures
no nucleus, circular DNA in cytoplasm
no mitochondria but can respire anaerobically
has a cell membrane, a cell wall, cytoplasm and a circular DNA molecule
Enzymes
