• Crime films have a range of different settings and locations which are shown on this mindmap. These settings vary depending on what the overall message is of the film, these locations can also play an impact on the way we see the lives of the characters in crime films

1. Urban areas

   Annotations:

   • Urban areas are similar to busy cities. Urban areas are commonly used for crime films as it again gives the audience a sense of helplessness since it makes the audience realise that crime can happen anywhere at any time

      Annotations:

      • Busy cities are used a lot for crime films. Is is used for a number of reasons, for example a busy city is used to try and create a sense of realism for the audience when watching since it gives the viewer the feeling that crime can happen anywhere at any time
2. Rough neighbourhoods

   Annotations:

   • Rough neighbourhoods are used to give a sense of realism to the film. Places such as Detroit in America are seen to be rough neighbourhoods and have high crime rates and many films use these real life examples as ways to easily show the roughness of these neighbourhoods.
3. Parties/Nightclubs

   Annotations:

   • Parties and nightclubs are commonly used as this is where some of the meetings can happen in crime films. In addition to this, in crime films successful crime masterminds will have lots of money and therefore are able to afford big nightclubs and are able to run lots of parties.
4. Places where Contraband takes place

   Annotations:

   • Contraband is where there is a trading of goods that are imported or exported, this is also illegal. A contraband can take place in a range of different settings including the ones shown in this mind map and are commonly used in crime films to add extra tension to the film
5. Dark streets and alley ways

   Annotations:

   • Dark streets and alley ways are both used for crime films. The alley ways give the audience a sense of claustrophobia and also strikes fear in the audience as they feel something bad is going to happen to the character. Dark streets are also used to try and have a impact on the audience as the dark makes the scenes of crime films feel more scary and threatening to the audience and the characters.
6. Mansions/big housing estates

   Annotations:

   • Big mansions are seen in crime films since successful criminals are able to make big amounts of money and use it to buy mansions. Furthermore big housing estates are also used to further show the desperate and low end lifestyles that many low end criminals have to deal with, a good example would be Kildulthood which uses big housing estates as one of its main locations.
7. Police Station

   Annotations:

   • A police station is usually used in crime films since it is where the chasing character (which is the character that is chasing after the criminal) will either have a confrontation with the criminal or it may even be where the police officer or detective is able to prosecute the criminal.
