Sees society as divided
into two classes, the
upper class and working
class (exploitation of the
working class)
Says that the working
class will eventually
realise they are being
exploited which will
cause a revolution to
overthrow the capitalist
society
Religion
Karl Marx sees
religion as a feature
of a class divided
society
Marx believes that
there would be no
need for religion if
society had no
classes
Marxists see religion as a tool
which helps to keep working
class people happy with their
unfair situation in life in
favour of the upper class
They see it as a
drug which is
used to drown
out lifes
problems
See religion as misleading the lower classes into
thinking that their suffering in this life will be
rewarded in the next life thus making them
accept unfair decisions made by the upper class
"Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the
expression of real suffering and a protest against real
suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the
heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless
conditions. It is the opium of the people."
