    1. Hydro-power or water power is power derived from the energy of falling water and running water, which may be harnessed for useful purposes
      1. Uses
        1. irrigation
          1. watermills, sawmills, textile mills
            1. dock cranes, domestic lifts
              1. To generate electricity.
              2. Hydroelectricity.
                1. Advantages
                  1. Dams are designed to last many decades and so can contribute to the generation of electricity for many years / decades.
                    1. If electricity is not needed, the gates can be shut, stopping electricity generation.
                      1. Once a dam is constructed, electricity can be produced at a constant rate.
                        1. When in use, electricity produced by dam systems do not produce green house gases.
                          1. Often large dams become tourist attractions
                          2. Disadvantages
                            1. Water quality and quantity downstream can be affected, which can have an impact on plant life
                              1. The dams are very expensive to build
                                1. Building a large dam will flood a very large area upstream, causing problems for animals that used to live there.
                                  1. Finding a suitable site can be difficult - the impact on residents and the environment may be unacceptable.
                                  2. Electricity generated by hydropower
                                    1. 16 percent of global electricity
                                      1. Some countries which utilize it.

                                            1. Brazil
                                              1. Pakistan
                                          2. Advantages of hydropower
                                            1. Does not emit greenhouse gases such as CFCs or methane etc. thus reducing global warming
                                              1. It’s renewable and can be utilized for generations to come
                                                1. Much more reliable than wind or solar power.
