Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?
  1. In my music magazine the social group that has been displayed is mainly young people from white British/European backgrounds.
    1. My social group choice has been influenced by my case study - magazine 'Q'. The statistics show that 83.8% of the readers are 15-44 years of age. This shows Q’s ability to make the magazine appeal to a wide range of ages and social groups. Q does this by featuring currently popular artists like Adele and classic artists like Madonna and John Lennon, they even feature artists that are disbanded or deceased as some issues are dedicated to them.
    2. Gender
      1. I have tried to portray females not as just objects that are pleasing to look at, but present them in a much better lighting and take it further than just sexy pictures.
        1. The audience of my magazine is reflected through the images that I use in my magazine. Although I have more female models than male, my magazine is aimed equally both genders. I have made it equal because I want my magazine do not separate genders. I have both female, male, and any other people that may not classify themselves in a specific gender.
        2. Ethnicity
          1. My target audience will come from mainly white background, as indie genre in general involves mostly white artist; therefore the audience will be mostly white - so that they can relate.
            1. However, at the same time I will try not discriminate non-white nationalities.
          2. Location
            1. The location for my target audience is in the UK, London. Most of the people I have mentioned in my music magazine are located in London.
              1. I chose London because media industries and production of magazine are highly distributed and therefore it will provide me & my magazine a range of different opportunities.
                1. In addition, it will increase the chances that my magazine will be popular across the UK.
              2. Occupation/Income
                1. The social group that I have represented come from a working background.
                  1. They are either in education/their first jobs or fully employed.
                    1. The family of the social group will have an average income.
                  2. Clothing
                    1. The clothing that my model is wearing are a regular clothing that doesn't affect the representation of any young person.
                      1. In fact, the simple clothing of the main artist in my front cover helps the audience to relate more, as they would be pleased to see a 'star' wearing clothes that they themselves are wearing.
                        1. Therefore creating a much stronger connection between the reader and the artist.
                    2. Overall Representation
                      1. My overall representation of the social group included in my music magazine is definitely a positive one.
                        1. I have represented a social group of young adults as being highly talented, creative and unique.
                          1. Also, I have presented social group of my music magazine as being determined and passionate about music; which is why many of them want to pursue their music related careers.
