Civilisation and Barbarity
At first cling to rules from their old life
They make rules similar to those followed at school
Piggy takes names
They have assemblies
Conch is like a hands up rule
Conch
Symbol of civilisation
It's power decreases
Reflects the weakening of civilisation
Its destruction represents victory of barbarity over civilisation
The rules from home stop them being too violent to begin with
Roger doesn't throw stones directly
Because of the "taboo of old life"
Boys react differently to the rules
Ralph wants to have fun
But does think they need rules
To make them act responsibly
Jack wants rules so he can punish rulebreakers
He also wants rules as he says their "not savages" which is ironic
Piggy is anxious to protect the rules
Gets upset when the other boys won't follow them
He calls them a "pack of kids"
Civilised values begin to fade
The littluns start going to the toilet everywhere
Forgot the civilised values taught at home
Jack lets the fire go out
Forgotten there's a chance of returning
The guilt they might of felt in an act of violence is gone
Therefore they get more violent
The 1st act of violence is when Jack hits Piggy
The breaking of the glasses could represent society starting to break apart
The new society is selfish and violent
Jacks new group is to "have fun"
Not interested in rescue or what's best for the group
When Simon is killed the boys are like animals
"tearing of teeth and claws"
Jack uses violent punishment to enforce the rules
Boys are beaten and tortured for no reason

However he is from somewhere that is at war
Civilised appearances just hide the "darkness of a mans heart"
Fear
The beast is used to present fear
Fear of the beast isn't rational
Descriptions of it keep changing
The reader knows it only exists in the boys imagination
The 3 most rational characters are P,R&S
Simon suggests that the only thing they should fear is evil in human nature
"only us"
Jack uses fear to control behaviour
Tells the others that the beast can disguise itself and they can never kill it
Keeps the boys feeling insecure and threatened increasing Jacks power over them
Power and leadership
Power changes hands throughout the novel
When they 1st arrive they want to be rescued and have a society similar to before
Therefore Ralphs leadership style appeals to them
As they become more savage their desires become more basic
Food, safety and certainty
Jacks dictatorial leadership is now more appealing
Ralph is the closest to an adult leader
Responsible
Use the power to protect everyone
Wants to live by the rules
Because they're the "only thing we've got"
Only thing that links them back to their old lives
The other boys don't see why it is important to have shelter and fire
Jacks leadership is violent and irresponsible
Jack craves power but doesn't want the responsibility that comes with it
Is not democratically elected
Becomes a dictator who abuses his power
With no adults he can enforce obedience in violent ways
Nature
Isn't always friendly
At the beginning R&P are already being scratched by thorns
Weather represents mood
It is wild and thundery when Simon is killed
Is like a tropical paradise
Is like the garden of Eden
Where A&E live until they learn of good and evil and lose innocence
Happens to the boys as well
Evil
Darkness is used to represent evil
Choir are described as "something dark...fumbling along""
Becomes Jacks tribe
In the dark younger boys have nightmares
Leads to a bigger fear of beast

Simon is the least evil
His goodness is overpowered by others evil
Pigs head on a stick
Is left as an offering to the beast
This represents the boys fear
It tells Simon "I am part of you"
This is Golding showing there is no beast
It is their own fear that causes the evil inside them to emerge
Called Lord of the Flies
Which is the name of the demon: Beelzebub means
When it talks to Simon it is like the voice of evil talking
