'He was austere with himself;', and 'though he
enjoyed the theater, had not crossed the doors
of one for twenty years' - showing repression.
Dr Lanyon
Respected as a scientist that did not push
the boundaries of science - a true Victorian
gentleman that suppresses his desires.
Dr Jekyll is respected and seen as a Victorian gentleman even
though he pushes the boundaries of science. Mr Hyde refuses
to follow the social conventions which allow for discrepancy.
Women
The maid
She is again used as a literary device - to frame the information in the text. At
the beginning of the extract, the maid has a romantic view of the world, never
having ‘thought more kindly of the world’,. This introduces her as a
stereotypical Victorian female - romantic, innocent and gentle. She then
notices Mr Hyde, but she has ‘conceived a dislike’ for him previously - a female
who is used to depict innocence already having a dislike for a man which is a
strong emotion, and a notion supposed to be suppressed by Victorian society.
The young girl
She is used a a literary device - only used as the
subject for the mistreatment by mistreatment as
youth can represent innocence and goodness, and
women were believed to be pure and innocent.
