Spelling Rules for Adding ed

1. A verb ends in -e, simply add the letter d.
1. love - loved
2. like - liked
3. smile - smiled
2. A verb ends in a consonant followed by y, change the y to i and add -ed.
1. marry - married
2. study - studied
3. cry - cried
3. A verb ends in a vowel followed by y, simply add -ed with no changes.
1. play - played
2. stay - stayed
3. enjoy - enjoyed
4. A One-syllable word ends in consonant-vowel-consonant (except x), double the last letter and add -ed. (Note: Never double final x.)
1. stop - stopped
2. jog - jogged
3. plan - planned
5. A word (including words end in x), simply add -ed with no changes.
1. wish - wished
2. visit - visited
3. open - opened
6. Irregular verbs.
1. eat - ate
2. drink - drank
3. come - came
