ERNEST RUTHERFORD

GOLD FOIL EXPERIMENT1909 - Fired positivly charged particles at an extremely thin sheet of gold. They expected postive particles to be delected because of previous work - the 'plum pudding'Most of the particles passed straight throough the gold, with a small number deflected. This famous experiment disproved the 'plum pudding' model'This led to Rutherford's new idea - the nuclear atom: in effect he changed chemistry. It described how nucleus is at centre surrounded by negative electrons.
