Their main deity(god) in their religion is Huitzilopochtli and was known as the sun and war god causing them to practice human sacrifice many times. They believed sacrifice gave power to the gods which in return would ensure the survival of the Aztecs.
The Aztec Empire was founded in 1300-1521 BC. The origin story goes like this; Huitzilopochtli killed his siblings because they killed his mother, Coatlicue. This influenced the Aztecs from being a group of farmers to the most violent/bloody early civilization as they valued sacrifice. Huitzilopochtli was the war and sun god. Huitzilopochtli, one day, commanded one of the Aztec leaders to settle in a place where he saw an eagle perched on a cactus, eating a snake. (These are on the Mexican flag as well!) That place was Lake Tenochtitlan.
