European governments began to support veterinary research around the 17th & 18th century after a series of animal plagues struck Europe. Before this early practitioners knew little of specific animal disease or anatomy, knowledge was scarce.1761 - First veterinary college was founded in Lyon, France. Medical treatment was mostly reserved for farm animals at this time. 1850's - U.S. Veterinary schools began to appear, usually required less than 1 year of training.The typical veterinarian was male for most of the 20th century.
