ESSAY WRITING (15%) – 60 MINUTES When a country develops its technology, the traditional skills and way of life die out. Do you agree or disagree? Justify your stand by giving relevant examples where appropriate. Write your essay in not fewer than 350 words. Nowadays, technological advances and their rapid and wide applications are having a significant impact on a nation’s traditional skills and ways of life. Technology is an important thing in people’s life and it clearly helps us to adapt with the period of development. I disagree with an opinion that, when technology develops in a country, the traditional skills disappear. First of all, traditional skills and ways of life are becoming an alternative solution to the problems caused by “mainstreamed” ways of life which are greatly influenced by modern technologies. For instance, a cosy restaurant where traditional, home-brewed beer is served, offers another experience to people who are bored with branded beers that have the same flavour and come out of mass production with new technologies. It is in such a venue where traditional skills are preserved, people become relaxed and educated. Providing diversity and thus enriching modern ways of life, such traditional skills and ways of life would continue to have their place. Therefore, traditional skills are very important to human daily life. Secondly, due to advancement in technology people are able to do distance learning. But, this trend cannot replace traditional method of teaching where teachers and students have a close relation as a family and the way teacher explain to its pupils are more understandable than by computer technology. In addition, many people writing skills are poor due to usages of software like, for example, Microsoft word where spelling are auto corrected and sentence are checked for grammatical mistakes. This clearly indicates that technology is decreasing our memory power and our learning skills which our ancestors left for us. Finally, conventional skills can be a great source of inspirations for modern technologies development. Evidences have shown that engineers and designers of modern times are still constantly inspired by the traditional skills. For example, sparkled by a traditional bamboo braiding skills from a rural Asian area, a world widely famous furniture designer, working with equally talented engineers, invented production lines to manufacture designed modern furniture that however have that particular traditional braid style touch. Such inspiration has boosted the business, therefore, in turn, would result in more money allocated for preserving those valuable skills for further development. This statement indicates that the traditional skills are important to develop the technologies. As a conclusion, the traditional skills and ways of life should be definitely advocated in today's day and age, especially for the reasons of cultural protection and living a simple and healthy life. Yet, it is even more desirable and probably more essential overall to improve the productivity of the traditional skills.
