BOOK REVIEWStructure:Introduction-author/book (brief statement of both)-subject and purpose of bookAnalysis-structure of book-contents explained-development of author's argumentEvaluation-strengths-weaknesses-author's intentions accomplished?-impact of book on readerConclusion/Key Points-summary of critique/closing statements____________________________________________________________________________________________________________Thriving begins with the idea of the human spark....the thing that gives kids joy and energy...hope, direction, and purposeSpark=spiritmy spark, my spirit, my breathConducted surveys numbering 6 or 7 thousand middle school kids "what gives you joy and energy? fills you with purpose and hope?"Answers: -they all got the idea of spark, spirit, etc...100%-they indicated that it was visible in others faces, body language etc...it radiated -they also said that no-one had ever asked them about it before....-60% could name at least one spark in their lives quickly-20% of the rest could name it with a little nudge or prompting from a counsellor -3 kinds of sparks: 1) Talent...sports, music, drama (2) Commitment...social justice, etc. (3) Personal Quality.....listener, leader, etc.Says we need to repeat it back to them to affirm it, that it is good and fruitfulHave listed over 220 kinds of sparksLeading categories: helping serving volunteering, leading, service to the globe, natural preservation, athletics, creative life...CREATIVE LIFE is the LEADER in all....largest category in which sparks fall...most kids say this is where there life is the fullest...art music drama dance, etc.Your spark is not the same as the work you do...it is a life orientation, an approach...not necessarily your vocation. Not about career planning, about nurturing your passion inside.The Thriving FormulaSpark+3 Champions+OpportunityWhen these things are put together kids thrive...they grow in compassion, dedication, etc.Kids now say only 1/3 of the people in school know what their spark is...in the broad social sense only 25% of their connections know their spark.An Anthem for this idea of The Thriving Formula : "Put me in coach, I'm ready to play...TODAY""You shall know them by their SPARKS" should be our mantra for dealing with young people.Innovation regularly comes from the inside out not the outside in...We should make knowing kids sparks at the forefront of the public school system, and at the head of the family unit.map after school programs against sparks, and map follow up opportunities in line with these sparks
