Definitions :Inflation: a rise of prices. [also meant that you couldn't sell cotton in the south]civil war: a war between two groups of citizens fighting against each other [civil war broke out on April 12th 1861]poll tax: kept poor whites and all blacks from voting because when they would vote, there was a tax. most of them could not afford the tax. [it prevented them from voting]grandfather clause: you were allowed to skip the literacy test if your father or grandfather was able to vote on January 1st, 1867Plessy vs. Ferg: the court that upheld the law of segregationsharecropping: work the land or rent it, in hopes of buying itpopular sovereignty : people in their own territory or state would vote directly on issues. [rather than having a representative decide for them]

The wilmot proviso the wilmot proviso showed the south that the north was serious about banning slavery. it was a bill that failed to get through congress.

 Kansas - Nebraska act the kansas nebraska act outraged the north. senator stephen douglas said that the two new territories should be decided by pop. sovereignty Bleeding Kansas: Kansas territory was the site of much violence over whether the territory would be free or slave territory by pop. sovereignty.

Lincoln's opposition of the K & N actlincoln ran as republican against stephen douglas. [stephen douglas was the author of k&n act]after lincoln won the election, south carolina responded by seceding from the union in 1860.

Emancipating the enslaved Lincoln's goal To preserve the union. Lincoln did not free the slaves in the very beginning because he wanted to avoid the separation of the union. Many union soldiers supported the emancipation proclamation because they knew it could be applied throughout the nation.

Compromise of 1850:- written by henry clay.- california admitted as free stateFugitive slave act:gov. arrested any suspicious 'run away'; had no right to a trial. thousands of african amer. fled to Canada

Fort Sumter: is where the war began. lincoln did not allow the south to occupy the fort; southern forces attacked the fort and the union surrendered .

Draft Laws: ages 18-35 served in the war. wealthy people that owned more than 20 slaves did not need to serve.
