The wilmot proviso the wilmot proviso showed the south that the north was serious about banning slavery. it was a bill that failed to get through congress.

 Kansas - Nebraska act the kansas nebraska act outraged the north. senator stephen douglas said that the two new territories should be decided by pop. sovereignty Bleeding Kansas: Kansas territory was the site of much violence over whether the territory would be free or slave territory by pop. sovereignty.

Lincoln's opposition of the K & N actlincoln ran as republican against stephen douglas. [stephen douglas was the author of k&n act]after lincoln won the election, south carolina responded by seceding from the union in 1860.

Emancipating the enslaved Lincoln's goal To preserve the union. Lincoln did not free the slaves in the very beginning because he wanted to avoid the separation of the union. Many union soldiers supported the emancipation proclamation because they knew it could be applied throughout the nation.

Fort Sumter: is where the war began. lincoln did not allow the south to occupy the fort; southern forces attacked the fort and the union surrendered .

Draft Laws: ages 18-35 served in the war. wealthy people that owned more than 20 slaves did not need to serve.
