Los organismos más primitivos, en función de su estructura, son agrupados en el reino de las moneras, dividido a su vez en bacterias y algas verdiazules o cianofíceas, que incluye unas 10.000 especies. Por carecer de núcleo celular se los llama procariotas. Muchos de ellos están dotados de clorofila, pigmento verde que les permite realizar la fotosíntesis, es decir, capturar energía lumínica y transformarla en energía química que utilizan para fabricar su alimento.
