What is the 3rd Estate- Everything What has it been until now in the political order-nothing What does it want- to become something

Sieyes 3 Questions

The French revolution is the story of the have nots who want to be part of something

Timeline

Cahies are produced- they get to louis XVI desk and he throws them away. On June 20th 1789 members of the 3rd estate show up, and the delegates of the 3rd estates are excluded from the meeting due to "repairs"- not true Tennis Ct. Oath- The 3rd Estate meets at an indoor tennis court, because they are locked out of the Estates General. One person emerges, and the Tennis Court Oath forms the National Assembly.  National Assembly- want to maintain the principles, to not be corrupt, not be absolute, and in the future, The firs and Second Estate, have shut them out and the National Assembly declares they  can be shut out, but they are not going to be silenced.  Declaration of rights of man and citizen- this is produced by the National Assembly. article 5 says- the law has the right to forbid and no one can be forced to do something that the law does not say, as long as it is in the law, people should be able to do anything that is nor harmful, laws should not be unreasonable and arbitrary. article 3 says no individual can exercise authority that does not precede from it. The position that you are in should be deserved and you should have to qualify for it (voted to be put into position) Article 2 the aim of every political association is the preservation of the natural rights of a man Storming of Bastille-Bastille is a prison and was stormed and overtaken in 1789, and was the symbol of government oppression, people began to take this into the streets, and are getting rallied up

Why Kill Louis XVI?

Timeline 1791- Flight to Varenes the city Louis XIV is caught in trying to escape France on the border of Austria  and constitutional monarchy 1793- Louis XVI Executed

No Other Option (no system, no policy, no hope for reconciliation.) Symbol of the French's power, revenge and justice  Violence as the normal   He is a prisoner of Paris He has abandoned his people- and betrayed any trust that the people of France by attempting to flee If Louis XIV has an attempt to escape again, he could go to Austria, and the Austrian army could come into France and defeat the revolutionaries.  Louis XIV has not violated any official crime, but he has committed a long train of abuses

A Bundle of Compromises Part II Checks and Balances  Idea of Montesquieu (Enlightened thinker) When power is in the hand of one person they can abuse the power. this can be prevented by the dividing the power The three branches of government has the ability to check someone by vetoing FederalismPower divided by federal or national government, state government and among local governmentFederal                                         States                                        LocalInternational Relations         Maintain State Roads                       Zoning  Diplomacy                            Voter Qualifications         Trade                                    Power to make Contracts and Wills Post Office                            TaxPower to Declare war and Peace                      TaxControlling MilitiaElastic Clause Laws can be stretched by congress when it is necceary and proper B.U.S is created by the congress in the late 1700's it is the Bank of The United States

Able Was I Ere I saw Elba

Same

Same thing backwards and forward, Elba is a place that is probably discovered by Napolean

Napoleon is Exiled twice, to Elba, and when he is exiled he said these words, Which mean Able was I when I saw Elba His situation is positive even though he is being exiled Think of it as "able as I ere I saw Huntsville" which is a prison (why would you be thinking positively about exile

Reign of Terror

1793-94 Guillotine- more humane, but many more people are going to be sent to their death Enemy of State? Paranoia  The Revolution has begun and bloodshed is just starting Robes Piere is the original leader of the revolution and is executed by the people of France

Return to normalcy

besides the raids of terror, the French want both safety and balance Sans Culotte

Napoleon

Rises through power by Military Means: Just like Caesar, who goes to Gaul to build an Empire France is getting their power back through Napoleon who is restoring their Glory  Napoleon Crowns himself  Emperor in the presence of others which say, and goes on of ten years of conquest  by 1812 Napoleon is heading into the heart of Russia to conquer Napoleon is exiled to Elba because he thought he could conquer in Russia, but his men didn't succeed because they don't have supplies, and encounter the Russian Winter  in 1816 Napoelon is Exiled once again to the british Island of St. Helena, and dies their After Napolean dies, the French once again have a king
