If it weren’t for Louis Leakey — a famous Kenyan paleo anthropologist and archeologist, we still wouldn’t have a clue how similar great 1) to us 2) . He set up the Leakey Foundation and initiated or helped to coordinate the Projects of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey and Birute Galdikas-Brindamour.
Jane Goodall began studying chimpanzees in their 3) in Tanzania in 1960. She came with no 4) , no experience, just patience and 5) . She gave chimpanzees names instead of numbering them. She also made some extraordinary discoveries: chimpanzees could make tools and use them to perform basic tasks in the wild; they had emotions — they could be kind, playful, 6) , aggressive, sad and tender. They shared many of the same actions as 7) , like hugging, kissing and tickling.
In 1967 Dian Fossey came to the Virunga Mountains in Rwanda to study mountain gorillas in its natural 8) . She discovered that they are peaceful animals and can only get angry when protecting their young. Dian Fossey also named each gorilla; for nearly 20 years she lived among them. Her dearest friend was a gorilla called Digit who was later tragically killed by 9) . Fossey’s 10) activities were not welcomed by Rwandan 11) whom she fought tooth and nail. She was found dead in her cabin in 1985. By the time she had already written the book “Gorillas in the Mist” which became a film in 1988 with Sigourney Weaver playing the role of aria Fossey. The third member of Leakey’s angels is Birute Galdikas. She discovered that orangutans have incredibly close relationships with their mothers for the first ten years of their life. They have their first baby at the age of 15 or 16; then teach their baby to survive in the 14) and only about 8 years later they can have another baby. Unfortunately, 15) of the orangutan’s 16) has left this magnificent species without a home or means to find food.
These three wonderful women have helped us learn a huge deal about great 17) . Sadly, all three of the species are now in danger of extinction, largely due to habitat loss and poaching.
