Fireflies, also known as lightning bugs, are neither flies nor bugs. They are in fact beetles, nocturnal members of Lampyridae, a word from Greek meaning to shine. Most fireflies are winged and have the ability to fly, but in some species, female fireflies are flightless. About 2,000 firefly species are found in tropical zones as well as temperate regions. Their environment of choice is warm, humid areas. These insects love forests, fields and marshes near ponds, lakes, rivers and streams.
