JUAN DE VELASCO
Juan de Velasco o Juan de Velasco y Pérez Petroche, sacerdote jesuita nacido en Riobamba el 6 de enero de 1727. Falleció en Faenza, Italia, el 29 de junio de 1792. Hijo de Juan de Velasco y López de Moncayo, riobambeño, y de María Pérez Petroche.
Inició su labor sacerdotal y docente en Cuenca, de allí pasó a Ibarra y luego a Popayán, que entonces también pertenecía a la Real Audiencia de Quito.
BIOGRAFIA
El padre Juan de Velasco fue natural de la antigua ciudad de Riobamba, descendiente de una de las más nobles familias de aquel lugar y religioso de la Compañía de Jesús, cuyo instituto abrazó después de haber recibido el presbiterado como clérigo secular.

Debemos recordar que en el siglo XVIII, Ecuador formaba parte del enorme dominio español bajo la figura administrativa, territorial y política de Real Audiencia, pero que por encima de esa formalidad, su alma nacional brillaba con absoluta autenticidad y diferenciándose nítidamente de sus vecinos
