Tonsillitis
Pathophysiology
The inflammation of the pharyngeal tonsils
Can be a viral or bacterial infection
85% are caused by a viral infections
Most bacterial infections are cause by group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus (GABS)
Epidemilology
Incidence is higher among school age children
Tonsils have a protective function, āabsorbing small numbers of organisms and so establishing
immunity by gradual dosage
Incidence of tonsillitis account for approximately 32 in 1000 patients annually
Risk Factors
Close contact with an infected person
Young age
Smoking or exposure
Weak immune
Ill ventilated or overcrowded environment
Alcohol use
Treatment
Viral infections, treat the symptoms
Bacterial infection, antibiotic
Treat the pain and fever, and encourage fluids and food
Treat with Antistreptoccol antibiotics
Clinical Presentation
Fever, foul breath and sore
throat
tender and or enlarge lymph nodes on the side of the neck
difficulty swallowing and painful swallowing
Enlarged tonsils, tonsilar exudate
obstructed airway
Viral and bacterial infections
Diagnosis
Penicillin, is the drug of choice if allegric erythromycin may be usedclindaymcin,
Rapid stress test and Throat cultures
CBC
Physical Exam
Tonsilectomy
Clinical assessment
Adaptive Response
Enlarge tonsils with exudate
Fever
Swollen / tender lymph nodes
