Ionic Bond

Compounds classified as IONIC are made from from IONS not neutral atoms. Ions are formed when one or more electron(s) transfers from one atom to another. The atom which loses electron(s) forms a positive charge. The atom which gains electron(s) forms a negative charge. Positive ions and negative ions attract one another and will bond. REMEMBER, The same charge will repel each other i.e positive will repeal positive and negative will repeal negative. Each ion is surrounded by oppositely charged ions that are held in place electrostatic attraction and will form a ionic lattice. The ions in this lattice are very strongly bonded - A very high temperature is required to melt the lattice. This means at room temperature the ionic compound is a solid. For an ionic bond you must have a metal and a non-metal.

Conducts electricity?

Does NOT conduct as a solid because the ions are not free to move
Conducts when dissolved in water or when molten because the ions are free to move

Covalent Bond

Transferring electrons between atoms to form Ions is one way atoms can join. This results in Ionic bonding. Atoms can also join by sharing electrons. This is called covalent bonding. Covalent occurs when non-metal atoms join.

Conducts electricity?

No because covalent compounds do not have free electrons or no ions
