Equality Act 2010 covers equality legislation dating back to 1969 it has two new concepts.
Equality Act 2010
concept No. 1 is the general duty
concept No. 2 are protected characteristics
The three aims of the equality general duty are to:
1. Eliminate discrimination
2. Advance equality of opportunity
3. Foster good relations between those who share protected characteristics and those who do not
There are nine protected characteristics which means a person cannot be discriminated against because having any of the protected characteristics.
The nine protected characteristics are: age, disability, gender, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, maternity and pregnancy, race, religion and faith, sexual orientation
