In 1830, Field Marshal Miguel Lino de Morais second governor of Goiás Empire, proposed changing the capital to the region of Tocantins, near Niquelândia.
On December 20, 1932, a committee to choose the place where the new capital would be built.
On 6 July the following year, Pedro Ludovico issued a decree instructing the urbanist Atilio Lima Corrêia the elaboration of the new capital project.
