Piaget's 4 Stages of Cognitive Development:

Sensorimotor...............Birth - 2......Object permanence is developing, infants think through acting
Preoperational.............2-7 years....Conservation is in the process of developing but not yet mastered, make believe play is present but children lack logic
Concrete operational....7-11 years... children become better with reasoning and logic thinking abilities, conservation is mastered
Formal Operational.......11 years and beyond, abstract symbolic thinking is established, enables deductive thinking skills and the ability to reason verbally with no reference to real world circumstances
