L35 Microbial genetics – microbes and medicine

Question 1 of 8

1

Which statement best describes a plasmid?

Select one of the following:

  • A circular, self replicating piece of gene in the cytosol of viruses.

  • A small, circular, self replicating DNA segment in the cytosol of bacteria.

  • A small, circular, complex protein structure found in the plasma of bacteria.

Explanation

Question 2 of 8

1

A bacteria undergoes binary fission to create two genetically identical bacteria. Which method of gene transfer is this?

Select one of the following:

  • Vertical gene transfer

  • Horizontal gene transfer

Explanation

Question 3 of 8

1

Select from the dropdown lists to complete the text.

In ( horizontal, vertical ) gene transfer, one trait is passed to another bacteria. In ( vertical, horizontal ) gene transfer, the whole genome is passed on.

Explanation

Question 4 of 8

1

Which classic experiment demonstrates horizontal gene transfer?

Select one of the following:

  • Griffith's experiment

  • Koch's postulates

  • Avery's experiment

Explanation

Question 5 of 8

1

Which type of horizontal gene transfer involves a pilus used to make cell-to-cell contact?

Select one of the following:

  • Transduction

  • Transformation

  • Conduction

Explanation

Question 6 of 8

1

Which statement describes transduction?

Select one of the following:

  • Transfer of DNA from one bacteria to another via a bacteriophage

  • The uptake of naked short fragments of DNA by naturally transformable bacteria

  • Transfer of DNA via a pilus using cell to cell contact

Explanation

Question 7 of 8

1

The uptake of naked short fragments of DNA by naturally transformable bacteria is a form of horizontal gene transfer called transduction.

Select one of the following:

  • True
  • False

Explanation

Question 8 of 8

1

In the lytic cycle, the virus uses the cellular machinery to assemble more bacteriophages. When the capsid is assembled, the intention is for it to contain it's own DNA. However, plastids from the containing can be incorporated into the bacteriophage too.
If this bacteriophage goes on to infect a different bacteria in a cycle, the bacterial DNA from the first bacteria will be transferred to the second and into its DNA.
