Question 20
Question
The League of Nations was set up in 1920 as a result of the Treaty of [blank_start]Versailles[blank_end]. It's main purpose was to be an international forum in which countries could work out their disputes in a [blank_start]peaceful[blank_end] manner. It's policy of [blank_start]collective security[blank_end] obliged members to act together to prevent strong countries from attacking weaker ones.
But the League was weak from the beginning. The [blank_start]United States[blank_end] refused to join, although it's president, Woodrow [blank_start]Wilson[blank_end], was first to propose the setting up of the league. Entry was at first denied to [blank_start]Germany[blank_end] because of it's role in World War 1. The [blank_start]USSR[blank_end] (Russia) was excluded from the League until 1934 because it had a [blank_start]Communist[blank_end] government.
The weakness of the government was exposed when it did nothing to prevent Italy from invading [blank_start]Abyssinia[blank_end].
