We like to be in control of our lives and being able to do things on our own time. Having automated systems like an ATM or a self-service check out line motivates us to engage more by giving us the feeling of control.
In the design and business world more companies are making it easier for people to do things on their own. Whether building a website or a creating a logo, it's becoming easier and cheaper for anyone to do, but that doesn't always mean it's going to be a good design.
