In this lesson, you will learn to recognise the different characteristics that makes a word simple, compound or complex. If you can identify a word to be either simple, compound or complex, you will know what strategies to use to help learn their spellings and meanings.

    What is a Simple Word?
      the smallest word form with nothing added to it   contains just one base element that holds the core meaning

    What is a Compound Word?
      a combination of two simple words   does not have to acquire the original meanings of the two simple words

    a base [free or bound] element combined with an affix [prefix, suffix, vowel connector]
