Tone: Manner of expression used to convey author's attitude towards the subject, work, character, thesis/theme. Style of writing (Formal, Informal, Slang, Humorous, Serious, Light-Heated, Earnest, Ironic, Satirical, Pageant) Keep in Mind: Author's tone is not the character's tone. -- Author feels

Significance: Helps reader to determine theme or message Engages reader Provides reader with significant insights into life and human nature - Accomplished via conveying theme through feelings & intellect.
