Avoir is used for: - telling someone how many family members you have - to ask how much or how many "combien de..." - used in several idiomatic phrases "il y a...." which means there is/are - to indicate that you need something "avoir besoin de..." - to indicate that you feel like doing or having something "avoir envie de..." - to talk about how old you are

AVOIR  (to have) j'ai tu as il/elle/on a nous avons vous avez ils/elles ont  

When avoir is used in the negative way:  the indefinite article (un, une, des) is dropped and replaced for "de or d'" Ex. Il a un vèlo.   ----->   Il n'a pas de vèlo.
